What is four-way stretch fabric? What are its characteristics?

Nov 04, 2024

Four-way stretch usually uses the method of adding spandex elastic yarn to the fabric to make the fabric elastic. First, the yarn and spandex covered yarn are twisted together to make elastic yarn. The feeding length of the two must be controlled separately to control the elasticity of the yarn. During the manufacturing and finishing process, the elongation of the yarn and fabric must be controlled to control the elasticity of the finished product.

Four-way stretch fabric is a warp and weft bidirectional stretch fabric. The general elastic elongation is 10%-15%, and the spandex content in the fabric is about 3%.

  Advantages of four-way stretch fabrics:

1. High strength. The strength of short fibers is 2.6-5.7cN/dtex, and that of high-strength fibers is 5.6-8.0cN/dtex. The strength in wet state is basically the same as that in dry state. The impact strength is 4 times higher than that of nylon and 20 times higher than that of viscose fibers.

2. Good elasticity. The elasticity is similar to that of wool. When stretched by 5%-6%, it can be fully recovered. The wrinkle resistance is far superior to other types of fibers, that is, the fabric does not wrinkle and has good dimensional stability. The elastic modulus is 2-3 times higher than that of nylon. It has good elasticity and is very suitable for women's clothing. The elastic women's leggings that have been popular in recent years can also be used for shoes, hats, home textiles, toys, handicrafts, etc.

3. Good heat resistance, and will not deform even at high temperatures. Good light resistance. The light resistance is second only to acrylic. The surface is smooth, the internal molecules are tightly arranged, and there is a lack of hydrophilic structure between molecules, so the moisture regain is very small and the moisture absorption function is poor.

4. Corrosion resistance. Resistant to bleach, oxidants, hydrocarbons, ketones, petroleum products and inorganic acids. Resistant to dilute alkali, not afraid of mildew, but hot alkali can cause it to decompose.

5. Good wear resistance. The wear resistance is second only to nylon, which has the best wear resistance, and is better than other natural fibers and synthetic fibers

  Disadvantages:

The color fastness of four-way stretch fabrics is generally not high, especially black is easy to fade. The color of the fabric is easy to be inaccurate, and color difference problems often occur. Secondly, the elasticity and weight of the four-way stretch fleece are relatively difficult to control.

In short, four-way stretch fabric is a very excellent fabric, which has the advantages of softness and comfort, good breathability, strong wrinkle resistance, good durability, and diversified design. But we also need to pay attention to some details when using it, so as not to affect the service life and effect of the fabric.
