Take a closer look at the fabric in natural light. Does the fabric appear to gave lines crossing over each other (woven) or do they look more like rows upon rows of narrow braids or loops?

The Scrunch Test

This is a simple way to test your fabric, as typically fabrics that are woven can be scrunched and maintain some sort of ‘shape' from the scrunch while knit fabrics usually collapse back down.

The Stretch Test

Knitted fabrics will always have a lot more stretch across the fabric width than a woven fabric – even a woven with added stretch!

A: One of my favourite things about jersey is that it does not fray. So there's no need to finish off your raw edges! You can do if you want to, but it risks over-stretching the fabric (see the first bullet point above). Take good care of your sewing machine.

Q: Do you need to hem jersey fabric?

A: Most jersey fabrics don't fray so basically you don't need to finish your seams off at all. If you still want to give your garment a more completed look you can either use a three-step zigzag as shown in the photo above or overcast stitch (shown previously) to finish the seams.

A: Since it is lightweight, jersey is not remarkably durable or insulative, but it is ideal as a base layer worn beneath thicker and more durable clothing. Jersey is highly absorbent, and it is very breathable despite its fully opaque, close-knit structure.
