What are some reasons why some countries do not use woodland camouflage?

May 27, 2025

Woodland camouflage is mainly designed for temperate forest environments. It has colors such as green, brown, black, and tan, and is suitable for areas covered with dense trees, bushes, and soil.
But the terrain environment of many countries is different from this, for example:
Saudi Arabia and Egypt use desert camouflage, which is mainly yellow-brown. Norway and Finland use snow camouflage, while Vietnam and Malaysia use bright green.
Some countries may have abandoned woodland camouflage due to political or cultural considerations:
In order to break away from Western military traditions, woodland camouflage was first widely used by the US military. Some countries choose local designs to show their independence or avoid overlapping with the US military image. Or some countries design camouflage that blends with the style of national clothing for the purpose of national identification.
In addition, some countries have their own textile and printing and dyeing technologies, which promote the development of local camouflage patterns:
For example, China has developed the "07-style digital camouflage" to replace the old woodland camouflage. Russia has also developed camouflage patterns including EMR (Gorka) that are specifically suitable for its own complex terrain.
