Application and development trend of bionic colors in camouflage clothing design

Nov 08, 2024

The colors of many animals can blend with the surrounding environment, providing inspiration for the color design of camouflage uniforms. For example, lions live in sandy plains and their bodies are yellow-brown or light brown, similar to the colors of dead grass and soil; the fur color of polar bears is consistent with the color of ice and snow. In the design of camouflage uniforms, similar colors are selected according to different combat environments. For example, in a desert environment, camouflage uniforms are mainly yellow, brown and other colors similar to the desert colors; in a jungle environment, green, brown and other colors similar to the colors of vegetation become the main colors, which can make the wearer better integrate into the environment and reduce the probability of being discovered.
The color matching of some animals can blur the outline, such as the black and white stripes on zebras. In the pattern design of camouflage uniforms, this color matching method will be borrowed, and irregular patches and stripes will be used to break the outline of the human body, making it difficult for the enemy to accurately identify the target at a long distance. For example, digital camouflage uniforms enhance this blurring effect through tiny pixelated patterns.

Chameleons can automatically change the color of their bodies according to changes in the environment, and their multi-layer skin cells contain movable green pigments. Inspired by this, researchers have developed color-changing fibers and color-changing dyes. Applying these materials to camouflage uniforms can make the camouflage uniforms automatically change color according to environmental factors such as light, temperature, and humidity, achieving better camouflage effects. However, this technology is still in the stage of continuous development and improvement, and has not yet been widely used in actual camouflage uniform production.
In recent years, some new bionic technologies have also been applied to the design of camouflage uniforms. For example, materials made using nanotechnology can achieve special reflection and absorption of light, so that camouflage uniforms can present different color effects under different viewing angles and lighting conditions, further improving the camouflage performance of camouflage uniforms.
In the future, camouflage uniform design will pay more attention to the combination of general camouflage and environment-specific camouflage. General camouflage can provide a certain degree of camouflage effect in a variety of different environments, while environment-specific camouflage is optimized for specific environments. For example, in some combat missions, soldiers may need to switch quickly between different environments. At this time, general camouflage can provide basic camouflage protection; in specific combat areas, such as deserts, jungles, cities, etc., soldiers can change to corresponding environment-specific camouflage according to actual conditions to obtain better camouflage effects.
With the continuous development of intelligent material technology, intelligent color-changing materials will be more widely used in camouflage clothing design. This material can automatically adjust the color and pattern according to the changes in the environment, so that the camouflage clothing always maintains a high degree of integration with the surrounding environment. For example, under conditions such as day and night, different seasons, and different light intensities, the intelligent color-changing camouflage clothing can automatically change color to adapt to changes in the environment, greatly improving the concealment and survivability of soldiers.
In addition to the camouflage function, camouflage clothing will also have more protective functions. For example, adding bulletproof, fireproof, radiation-proof and other functional materials to the materials of camouflage clothing will enable soldiers on the battlefield to not only avoid enemy reconnaissance, but also effectively protect themselves from various injuries. At the same time, the color and pattern of these functional materials also need to be coordinated with the overall design of the camouflage clothing, so as not to affect the camouflage effect.
With the development of information warfare, camouflage clothing will be combined with information technology and become one of the information terminals of soldiers.
