300D and 500D Oxford cloth

May 21, 2026

The "D" in Oxford cloth represents Denier, which is a unit for measuring fiber thickness. Simply put, the higher the D number, the thicker the yarn, the thicker and more durable the fabric; The lower the D number, the lighter and softer the fabric.
The main differences between 300D and 500D are as follows:
1. Thickness and texture
300D: Medium thickness, fine yarn, relatively soft and lightweight feel, and finer texture.
500D: Thicker, with noticeably thicker yarn, a stiff feel, and a stronger texture on the surface of the fabric.
2. Wear resistance and strength
300D: Daily usage intensity. It can meet the carrying needs of ordinary commuting and school, with good tear resistance, but not as good as fabrics with higher Daniel numbers.
500D: Higher wear resistance. More resistant to scratches and wear than the 300D, it is usually used in areas such as the bottom or sides of backpacks that require enhanced wear resistance to cope with outdoor or heavy use environments.
3. Weight and purpose
300D: Lightweight. Commonly found in lightweight backpacks, computer bags, casual bags, or inner compartments of backpacks, aiming to reduce weight.
500D: heavier. Mostly used for durable parts of business bags, toolkits, or outdoor backpacks that require a stiff appearance.
💡 Purchase suggestions
Daily commuting/school: 300D is usually sufficient, lightweight, and not easily worn out.
Outdoor/Heavy Loading: 500D or higher (such as 600D, 1000D) can provide stronger protection, but the weight will also increase accordingly.
